Hello just wondering what you guys think as far as preferred maker. I know a lot of people have said DWM are better quality but I own both and I prefer my Erfurt. I think it’s cool how Erfurts were made more so for the military from my understanding and DWM had the commercial ones and military. I’m fairly new to Lugers so my research is basic but I look forward to hearing what you guys think.

It doesn't matter to me as I like Imperial Lugers overall. IMO both manufacturers bring something to the table collecting wise. I have both Erfurt and DWM, Navy and artillery in addition to a few run of the mill 4inch barrel military types. It would be like asking me "cake or ice cream?" I'll have both I just love dessert!

I agree with jeb111 - both are great and why stop at one! I love the history behind each of the Luger manufacturers and love collecting the German military issued guns. What is cool about the Imperial Lugers is that many are unit marked and you can trace them back to the history of that particular unit. I love both Erfurt and DWM guns for many reasons - but that is a big one for me.

I have 3 imperial unfortunately none are unit marked but look forward to getting one someday!

I can't even remember when I saw an Erfurt Luger in the wild last time.
Interesting you should say that. You may recall the thread I started about $800 shooters at my LGS. They also had (still have?) a 1917 Erfurt, priced at just under $1700.

I would rather have that than either one of those shooters. It looks good to me, at least from your photos. I am not an Erfurt guy, but if you get more pics, put them up for the boyz here to see and get their opinion. Start a new thread. An all-original matching Erfurt P.08 is not an easy find, especially if you can inspect it in person.

That Erfurt is far from”all-original”; it has been refinished.

If that's the case, a solid pass then. Like I said, I am not an Erfurt guy... For $1700 you can do much better. A couple of months ago I saw a 1915 DWM, a bit cosmetically challenged, but all there. $1500, probably would've taken a few $$ less since it was a consignment piece along with a late '30s BYF Luger... So, they are out there...

It all depends on many factors. What is your budget? Is it your first Luger? Shooter or collector or both? In my opinion, if I were to have just one representative of the quality/looks/ability to shoot once in a while, I would seriously look into getting a 1908 Commercial DWM. The quality is very high, looks the best without the stock lug, no grip safety, chambered in 9x19, not beat to crap in wars, though some did do the dance in WWI... The only drawback is lack of the hold open, I will not get a Luger without one (that just me though), but there are some out there with HO installed, curtesy of the Erfurt factory in many cases....

I've been having a wonderful time with the Swiss Lugers. I think my favorite is the 1906 made in Switzerland, love the grips and it's very accurate. The only minor problem is the .30 caliber, but I reload.
So, I am currently DWM or Bern. Also own a 1914 Erfurt that's a beauty too.

Every time I read one of Herr Watson's posts, I get this really strange urge to go out and shoot one of my lugers. I've never shot a luger, and I have absolutely no urge to shoot one other than these odd times when I read his posts. 🤔
