As indicated in my post of 11/04/03 Grip strap markings under the Central Powers Pistols and Accessories 1900/1918 I stated that when this pistol arrives the serial # would be posted for anyone wishing to update their data bases. Well she arrived today after much paperwork 7183 (d) 93RMG on front grip strap, two original serialed magazines stamped down the spine rather than across the spine, came complete with holster that begs a question. The holster is stamped inside of flap with an ink stamp 72R and another letter that is faded also stamped into the leather in very large letters # 191 and another # that is not a 1 .The flap is also stamped in the normal fashion with the makers name Franz Hermann over top Erfurt 1911. My question is did the Erfurt arsenal produce leather goods or was Erfurt the name of a town with Franz Hermann residing within a long time ago. The pistol is in fine shape, no stock lug, holdopen was added at a later date and stamped with a small proof to indicate this. The proof at the holdopen is an identical stamp as on the takedown tool in Jans post about the 1912 Erfurt pioneer unit

LugerLou,
* Erfurt is the name of a city in Germany. I have no recollection hearing of the Erfurt Arsenal producing PT.08's. I think Franz Hermann was a leather working firm, contracted for Luger holsters, residing in the town of Erfurt.
* Are the mags matching numbered to this example? If not, what might be their S/N's including suffix.
Thanks,

Your luger was part of the 8th Division during World War I. Here are some rough notes that I made on the 8th Division (I used to own a Luger marked to the 8th Division)(From 251 Divisions of the WWI German Army.)
8. Division, 4th Army Corps, 1st Army
1914 BELGIUM, LOUVAIN(AUG. 19), BRUSSELS(AUG. 20), SOLESMES (AUG. 26),
1914 FRANCEAISNE, CUFFIES, CHAVIGNY, PASLY, ARRAS(OCT.)
1915 FRANCE,SOUCHEZ FRENCH ATTACKS, BATTLE OF LOOS COUNTER ATTACK HEAVY LOSSES (SEPT. OCT.)
1916 FRANCE SOMMEPOZIERES-LONGUEVAL-BOISDEVILLE, HEAVY LOSSES
1917 LOOS, SERIOUS LOSSES FROM BRITISH RAIDS.
1917 VALUE ALWAYS ON THE DEFENSIVE AFTER 1914, HELD ITS POSITIONS WITH TENACITY, DEFENDED ITSELF WELL IN ATTACK
1918 BATTLE OF LYS CAPTURED MERVILLE(APRIL 11),
1918 YPRES (MAY 15-JULY 1),
1918 LE CATELET (SEPT 23) VENDHUILE, GUISE, MAULDE
FIRST CLASS

RockinWR @ Jan Thankyou for your answers, and input, the magazines are serialed to the pistol and I believe that the holster is the one issued to the firearm from day one.It is the large #'s inside the flap that I was trying to figure out and the Erfurt proofed holdopen that was added after manufacture, cross shifting of inspectors I suspect. Will not be able to post pictures untill Dec.14th. No tool came in pouch so the hunt is on for an old imperial marked one.Would like to know from Mr Still how one goes about obtaining the battle history booklets like the ones he shows in his displays, Every luger has a history you just need to know how to unlock the key and for me that is the most exciting aspect of luger collecting once obtaining an old jewel.

Pictures at last, delay due to holidays, look at holster markings carefully and your thoughts please, the holdopen may not be a erfurt proof, instead an imperial one, the eyes are not that good anymore.

Beautiful unit marked(93.R.M.G.)Luger, holster, and presentation.

Holsters were not covered by the firearms and blades unit markings orders. The 72R on your holster likley signifies 72nd Infantry Regiment.
Thanks for your presentation
