Gentlemen,
I have a 1917 Artillery Luger with the serial number stamped lengthwise with large numbers across the wooden mag. bottom. It matches the gun. According "Imperial Lugers" page 88, all Lugers after 1912 should have the serial number stamped crosswise with small letters. What is correct? This Artillery was in a friends family for many years...I'm positive the mag. number has not been messed with (at least 70 years).

On a 1917 the mag's numbering should be with small numerals left to right. If the numbers match the pistol one would have to think a previous owner stumbled across an incorrect yet matched mag.
