"True" or "faked" scribe lines are all but impossible to determine. The only witness mark which can demonstrate anything about a barrel's originality is one which is perfect, that is, a single unaltered mark struck by a single instrument.
I'd be -very- interested in seeing a clear, detailed, very close-up picture of the witness mark on the 1902 you are considering, along with any marks on the bottom of the barel and on or around the receiver's recoil lug.
