can anyone direct me to a site that shows various true and faked scribes that can assist one in determining whether a barrel has been replaced? I am looking at a 1902 fat barrel and the barrel has a scribe mark but not the frame. i can hardly imagine that the armorer missed the frame with his little chisel or whatever they used. The gun is an american eagle sn 22269 and all matching except magazine.
I heard that there is a posting on the net at some board that shows real and fake or improvised scribes. I'll bet Mr. Still knows. If someone would please direct me to a site or a book I would be grateful. Thanks Mike

Mike,

Here is the link: http://www.gunboards.com/luger/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=110 to the discussion on this site.

"True" or "faked" scribe lines are all but impossible to determine. The only witness mark which can demonstrate anything about a barrel's originality is one which is perfect, that is, a single unaltered mark struck by a single instrument.

I'd be -very- interested in seeing a clear, detailed, very close-up picture of the witness mark on the 1902 you are considering, along with any marks on the bottom of the barel and on or around the receiver's recoil lug.
