C-96 Unit Markings ("E/SU4"; S.Op.I.55.R")

I have a 9mm C-96 "E/SU4" marked pistol, Ser# is 850xx - similar to the one illustrated on Pg. 200 of "Axis Pistols" - that was "imported from Norway" several years ago. It came with a pigskin holster that has no ammo clip pocket or mfg. markings.

The front strap of the pistol is marked : "S.Op.I.55.R" a previous marking was removed.

From Axis Pistols, Page 199, my guess is:

"Schutzpolizei. Oppeln. 1st Police Unit. Property #55"

I haven't found any information on the "R"

Can you help me ID this?

A European friend said that the Oppeln district included the Auschwitz Camp - but I thought Auschwitz was in Poland - not Germany.

Can you help me ID this?

Thank you.

RIA93,

"R" stands for Revier or in english "Precinct".

Thanks - so is this from the 55th Precinct - or what? Can I start over - what does the whole marking series mean? Sorry.

Klaus,

Thank you very much. I've been wondering about those markings for years! Would you (or anyone) happen to know where the Oppeln district was located - or could you direct me to a source? Thanks again.

Thank you very much, Sir. It appears that much has changed in the world since these maps were produced!
