Colt detective sp marking

I have an old Detective Special Colt. The butt is marked "N P 5" Would I be correct in assuming that is a police department?

There is a good chance that your Colt was the property of a police department, but a lot of other agencies also marked their weapons. After WWII the Tennessee Valley Authority purchased a quantity of the Smith & Wesson Victory Model revolvers, and these were marked with T.V.A. and the weapon number.
