here are some better pictures. it seems this pistol has traveled far as of late? how can you tell if it has been 'dipped'? i compared it side by side with another cyq and could not tell. orv, could you explain 'reported three times before'?

i paid $400 down, the person i bought it from is letting me pay the remainder by check via mail. he will then send the capture paper. will post that as soon as i get it.

I have been collecting P38 information for 30 years..and have over 27,000 serial numbers recorded.

This gun was reported, as I said, on 3 different occasions. The first from 2001 stated the gun was in Germany and was an import from the Ukraine

I have kept several photos of the gun that were posted. Here is one of the barrel assembly before it was 'cleaned up'. Note the dip blue on the block and unlocking pin?

thanks for the info, orv. if you retained any other pictures you're willing to post, it would be appreciated. other than that i feel like i've been screwed, this is extremely interesting. can you report the other sightings of this pistol? i'm trying to figure out how it could have made it to the states without going thru an importer and being so marked... i probably don't want to know.

what do you estimate it to be valued at in its current condition? if it was un-dipped?

Ditto on Weimar Police's comment of amazing!!! You have some database there! I have several P.38s, mostly local estate pick ups. One more collectible example, a BYF 42, that was acquired from another collector in the 1980s. I have to admit I was a bit dumbfounded when you revealed the "clean up" of this P38. I had no idea such things were being done. Anyone know how this is being done so that an honest collector knows what clues to look for when buying? Things like this certainly take the fun out of collecting....just like the other German WWII "souvenirs" I guess.....I know of some great collectors that gave it up as a result.

Keep up the good work and let me know if you'd be interested in data on any of the pistols I own.

pretty surprising, were not talking some rare luger or ss 98k. i'll come clean, i paid $700, so if russian captured p-38's are going for $450, i guess i only got screwed for $250. the person i got it from said thay he had recently acquired it (that part is apparently true) along with some other items. he's a regular at the washington arms collector's show, with a large display every time. i don't believe he knew it was doctored - those antics will get your kicked out for good.

now, how to be pc and let him know...

PS Vader is at Exit 59 on I-5..I live about 15 miles out in the 'boonies' from the exit.
