May I ask you what the serial number is? Or at least its range?
There were some contracts (like the Brazilian) that ran into 1940-41.
Some commercial were also fit with the Swartz safety device, but hose came earlier, in 1937.
For sure, a 1940 Colt 1911a1 U.S. issue pistol is desirable and demands big $ if its in good collectible shape. As for the government version I suppose its desirability, like all arms, is contingent upon who has interest.
A letter from Colt would tell you when it was manufactured, when it was shipped, and to where it was shipped.
