German Soldier Firing a Revolver

Here is a recently aquired photo of a german soldier firing a small revolver. It appears to be a Velo Dog or perhaps a german made small caliber commercial pistol? What do you guys think?

I suppose a small pistol is better than NO pistol,
especially when spending time on the front lines:)
