I have recently seen some pictures, and the person was holding their pistol with some kind of gloves on. I have always just used a silicon rag and wiped mine down after I handle them. Just wanted to know what others out there are doing with theirs.
Thanks,
James

Except when field stripping I wear a white cotton glove when handling or shooting my 45+ guns. Overprotective perhaps, but perspiration salts removed the grip strap blueing from my Colt .22 in two weeks of summer shooting when I was a teen. A lesson remembered, however a silicon or oily cloth wipe down can be equally effective.

I had to grin when I read this. I also have a Colt .22 (Woodsman Sport Target, my first handgun). I removed the bluing from the frontstrap soon after I got it. Lived in south Florida at the time so I kept it well wiped down, but you could (and still can) see the "grooves" in the frontstrap where my fingers contacted the metal.

Some folks do have "acid fingers" due to their body chemistry. Unfortunately, it can be expensive to find this out after handling a collector firearm. I wear gloves, and so does anyone who is invited to handle my guns.

(Its also one of the reasons why I like the Glock - I can't rust the polymer frame....)

Hi TR, To bring another smile, my Colt was a 6"Match Target Woodsman which was used to depopulate a rat colony and squirrels near a Michigan lodge. I also tried a 7,63 Mauser C96 on squirrels without success but terrified them with the booming report and 6" cone of flame. It's said some were last seen in Minnesota. Sorry PETA.
While the non-rust properties of polymer are admirable, I have a physiological reaction to pistols using it. My hands quiver, eyes water, nose runs and I have an uncontrollable urge to grasp a Luger. (With a white glove) Alas, the affliction of a Traditionalist.

I use cotton gloves and a silocone rag on all my stuff, even the crappy beaters. My collection is one of a more functional nature. I have some mechanically functional guns that are pretty beat up. I have some real nice ones, ranging up to100% condition, as well. Careful handling will preserve all these pieces for future generations of the culture. Too often we have seen the intrinsic value of working arms diminished by carelessness, not to mention the degradion of truly rare and historic pieces by folks just not knowing enough to keep them properly. On the upside, those beat up and neglected firearms fall right into my range of affordability, which keeps me interested and in the game. We are simply custodians of a priceless and precious heritage.

I never shot any of my Lugers but do handle the regularly, because they are so very cool. The fit, the grasp, the aim, I do have a few displayed for my own pleasure. Once a week due to the formidable climate in Florida, I wipe the displayed guns with Rem Oil. A prior cliect had an old Browning that had been handled before stored for over a year and yes there where discernable markings. I do feel like a weekend curator and display four or five at a time. Holding your Luger while wearing a glove is the same as wearing a condom, it might be safer but not as enjoyable.

My First Luger

Hi Guys, I'm new to this site and luger collecting. I purchased this pistol a few months ago and finally am getting around to researching it. It's numbers matching with the exception of the mag. The guy (my neighbor) I bought it from said his father brought it back from Germany when he was serving in WWII. I also got about 50 third reich tinnies and medals as well as an original armband and Nazi flag. I paid $1000.00 for it all and wondered if you guys think I did ok. I don't really care if I paid more than I should as it's some very cool stuff and hours of researching fun.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the welcome and the post on my pistol. I only have one luger but I'm not new to WWII collecting. I have a number of Yugo, Czech, German and Turk mausers. Also have Swiss, Russian and Finnish rifles.
I won't bore you with the rest but it seems my interest as of late are Lugers and P-38's. I don't have a P-38 yet but I hope to soon.
