I have collected Lugers off and on for several years but only deal with a couple of major resellers that I know are reputable. Would someone go out on a limb and tell me which major resellers I should not buy from. I will keep all correspondence confidential.

I often get hints of one or more by reading these and other boards but have yet to determine for sure who everyone is talking about.

In my humble opinion, I would recommend that you either deal with Simpson or FGS for the best quality firearms [ lugers in particular ], which in most cases will cost you more but honesty will be their main policy.

Both Bob Simpson and Doug Smith seem to be honest and straightforward in their dealings. I have also had a very good experience with one of our members from Canada, Peter Dunster.

As to price, sometimes (but not always) they are higher. But they stand behind what they sell.

I bought a Efurt from Simpson's--It had a cracked breech block and replaced firing pin-advertised as original-I got a refund but still had to pay the postage both ways. The reply was "Oops-missed that." I won't deal with someone who does not stand behind his products advertising.
I have had a couple other similar "oopses" I think some of these guys rely on your stupidity or the high shipping deterrent.
I bought a 1918 from Shattuck-real nice brown holster-nice gun-"original" he forgot to mention that someone had dropped it and broke off one sight ear and that the wood bottomed magazines had repro wood bottoms-also the TD lever had two different numbers on it.
Years ago on the old Luger Forum someone offered the advice "Be careful of anyone who sells lugers for a living."
Lugers are sadly heading the same way as a lot of other stuff-the prices are out of sight and the faking is rampant.

Mike, that is a shame to hear. I do beleive that anby of the big dealers pass a LOT of guns through their shops, so I doubt they get looked at as close as they sometimes should?

Mike, Ed, A seller will never look as close as a buyer. It's like grading condition, a seller might grade it 90% but a buyer would grade the same pistol at only 85% perhaps. Depends on who's doing what. I agree with MikeP...A dealer should always make sure to note any and all faults and if any are missed he should eat the shipping. Not that it's going to be that way but in a perfect World...Jerry Burney

I'm surprised that you had to pay shipping "both ways" when the dealer admitted to being at fault. Did you discuss this with the owner (Bob Simpson)? If not, maybe you should - you might get a refund.

Just for fun, I went into my "bound book" and counted the number of transactions I’ve had with Simpson Ltd. Over the years I’ve bought 23 pistols – many were Lugers. I’ve probably sold or traded an equal number.

I can’t recall one instance where Bob Simpson has "relied on my stupidity." In fact the contrary is true, I’ve received an invaluable education (and free phone advice)– probably worth far more than the cost of the items I have purchased. In fact it was Bob selling me the book "Axis Pistols" that got me interested in collecting in the first place.

Bob Simpson and Doug Smith have an extensive inventory of quality Lugers and other collectables. If you work with them in a professional manner I'm sure they will return the favor.

Also on the comments about dealers not checking their pieces--I could not disagree more-keyword here is "profesional"
The most irritating thing to me is the little details left out-as when Shattuck told me the 1918 had two wood bottom mags-both were fakes.

I have had this experience with others.

Presently I am having a problem with a cracked stock on a big money carbine-seller said it was perfect, Fed Ex says the box appears undamaged.-Guy with final say is on vacation.

Solution-never ever buy anything without getting your hands on it first.
