Your 1917 dated Imperial Luger was routed to the police during the Weimar or Nazi era. The sear and magazine safety was installed according to Prussian State Police orders dated July 1933. The standard caliber for the German police and military was 9 mm. I would guess that the Lugers barrel was replaced after the end of World War II.

The 5/16"+/- flat faced set screw in the receiver sounds interesting. Is it to hold a 7.65 mm barrel liner? Does its hole extend into the barrel?
