I just aquired a lot of mag bases, mostly wood (reproduction, I believe) along with some black plastic and one ivory.
Never taking anything for granted (plastic ivory?), I did the old red hot needle test on the ivory. Lo and behold it passed! The base is unmarked with checkerboard serations. Obviously hand cut at about 38-40 lines per inch.

Anyone ever seen anything like this before?

Can you scan it in or take digital photos?

I have seen the plastic, but never ivory, although I have seen ivory grips before.

Wish I could put up a pix, but am limited by equipment and know-how. Sorry.

The grips you mentioned sound nice. I have a 1920 commercial that I love to shoot. Perhaps I will look for some faux ivory grips and put the base on a new mag.

Dwight has a set of ivory grips and magazine bottom on a very nice Thor restored gun HHHMMMMM maybe he will post a photo of it.

Mammoth tusk ivory from the Russian Tundra. Otherwise it would be highly illegal here in Germany. Cracks easily.

The gun isn't really a Thor restoration, its a mismatched shooting Luger with a custom 5" barrel which Thor custom-refinished. As such it isn't really appropriate for this forum, it can be seen at http://forums.lugerforum.com/cgi-bin/lugerforum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000122
