Hey folks, I was referred to this site by a fellow collector on another forum site, and he mentioned that this would be the place to get the scoop on what exactly I have.
First off, I inherited 4 Lugers(among many other firearms) from my father who passed in 2009. I am just now getting to researching the Lugers in the collecion. I will more than likely be inquiring about them all soon. They inlcude a DWM 1918 Artillery, a beautiful S/42 with original holster and 2 original mags, a mostly original 1940 shooter(replaced toggle assy.), and the one in question described below.
The one I would like to know about is pictured, and I originally suspected it to be a 1920 Commercial, but there are some proofs I don't recognize, an eagle with downward swept wings. I was told on another forum that it might be a Reichsheer service pistol from the Weimar Republic, established by the Treaty of Versailles.
It has an undated chamber, "Crown over N" proofs, DWM marked toggle, serial number is 3453s with all matching parts, I believe it to have the original finish, it has a wood based magazine, and it is chambered for 9mm Para.
Also, I was made aware that the serial number on the front of the frame has a distinctly different font than the rest of the numbers on the gun. The serial in pic #3 has definite "round topped" number "3's" in "3453", and the font has no serifs. In pic #4, as well as the rest of the number markings, the number "3" has a flat or straight top. I was told by several other collectors that they have never seen anything quite like this....
I am more of a WWII era collector than WWI, so I don't know much about the time period of the Reichsheer/Reichswehr.
Just trying to get ahold of the history behind my pistol, and possible value.
Thank you in advance for any help, this site and its members have come highly recommended!!
***UPDATE***
Upon some digging through old papers of my late fathers', I came across a bring back document for the pistol in question!!! It is a US War Dept. document dated in June of 1946. The serial number is hand writen in pencil, along with the soldier's name and rank, who captured the pistol. I unfortunately don't have it with me so I can't get any more specific on the details, as far as who brought it back and such. I am sure this will increase the value of the pistol, but am not sure how much. I will be sure to post a picture of the document as soon as I can. Thank you again for any help with an updated value range!! Have a great day everyone.
***UPDATE #2***
I finally got a chance to get some photos of the bring back document for the Weimar Luger. It seems pretty standard, although I find it quite interesting that the pistol was made in 1929-'30, during the Weimar years, and it made it throught the fall of the Third Reich to be brought home after the war. There is no doubt some history in this piece....if only it could talk! The pics are below the pistol. Any thoughts and comments are welcome as to its history and/or change in value. Thanks again!!
Also, my father was just a collector, and never served. I do not know who the name is on the bring back document.
