I'm brand new to the Luger World; would appreciate some help identifying the following. Pls bear with me as this is my first Luger.

Appears to be an old style PO8 with 4 inch barrel. Markings: Top of the receiver: "1940" and "42". Right Receiver: 2x Wampt "655" and Eagle over "N". Left Receiver: Crown over a script "L" (I think). Backstrap: "M" over an anchor and "1357 N". Also has a cutout which for attaching a stock. Forestrap: "R.A.R. 51.7.39" Please note the entire pistol is NICKLE finish.

My questions: What do the specific markings indicate? Were nickel-plated lugers issued or is this the work of Bubba? This functions fine, in good shape with no pitting. What do you think it may be worth? Many thanks to all...

It is considered a "shooter" due to the nickle finsh, but still worth around $400-$500 and probably a great shooter!

Thanks for the "Welcome"; am happy to be here. No, all the numbers do not match. I am really interested in the the rather curious Bakstrap markings: "M" over an anchor, "1357 N" and forestrap markings "R.A.R. 51.7.39". Please, any idea? Thanks...

The backstrap marking is for the North Sea Naval Station, applied by orders of the Reichsmarine during the Weimar period.

The frontstrap marking, if the first "R" is scriptic, would probably be interpreted as 51st Reserve Artillery Regiment, 7th company, weapon number 39. I may be wrong about the interpretation as it appears to be nonstandard.

Chances are that the frame of your pistol was from an LP08.

As George said the R.A.R. 51.7.39 is an Imperial Reserve Field Artillery Regiment stamp and the 1357 N is a Reichsmarine/Kreigsmarine stamp.

The Field Artillery stamp was applied by the Iperial German Army during World War I and the Reichsmarine/Kreigsmarine stamp was applied in about 1935 (see table page 145 Axis Pistols). It would be very unusual for the Imperial stamp to be left intact when the Luger was reissued by the Reichsmarine/Kreigsmarine during the Nazi Era. In my opinion, the unit stamps are suspect. Detailed photographs of the unit stamps would be of interest.
