Good Morning!
I am helping a friend who is managing the estate of her late mother, a murder victim, identify and value assets. One of the assets awarded to the estate from the assets of her husband, the convicted perpetrator, is supposedly a WWII luger brought back by his father. The family story verified thru his sister is that it was recovered by their father after a battle from a dead Nazi officer, possibly SS.
Although the gun was NOT involved in the crime, it was taken into custody by the local Sheriff's Department as evidence and won't be relaesed back to the estate until after his appeal process is over. Here is what I know to date:
I need to know:
Any thoughts or guidance until then?

One of the assets awarded to the estate from the assets of her husband, the convicted perpetrator, is supposedly a WWII luger brought back by his father. The family story verified thru his sister is that it was recovered by their father after a battle from a dead Nazi officer, possibly SS.
Although the gun was NOT involved in the crime, it was taken into custody by the local Sheriff's Department as evidence and won't be relaesed back to the estate until after his appeal process is over. Here is what I know to date:
- The family insists that it is a WWII luger.
- The Sheriff's Department listed it on the evidence record as a Mauser-Werke 7.65 pistol.
- The Sheriff's Department provided a serial number of 486103 from the gun itself.
- I will be granted an opportunity by the Sheriff's Department to inspect and photograph the gun in the near future
I need to know:
- Specifically where to look on a WWII luger for the gun's official serial number, and
- If I confirm the six digit number above, is it actually a WWII luger or is it something else similar. (I have shown the family members, except the perpetrator, who have actually viewed the gun in the past photos of both a luger and a similar WWII P-38 and they all insist that it is a luger.)
Any thoughts or guidance until then?
