In Luger pistols, a matching magazine is one that has the full serial number, including the suffix if any, of the Luger pistol it's in, stamped on the bottom piece of the magazine.
Jack..... I would also add that most military Lugers will also have a correct acceptance stamp on the mag bottom that would match the gun or generally acknowleded to be correct for the period involved. Read Jan's THIRD REICH LUGERS to find out a bunch of stuff about Luger mags as well as Lugers in general.......
The only stupid question is the one you don't ask. I know, because I ask lots of questions and the guys seem glad to share their knowlage. So keep asking!
The only bit of info I might add to the posts above - if you are asking about "matched" magazines for a military issued Krieghoff (as we are in the HK forum ), then they won't have a letter suffix - on the serial number and an LWaA2 in the proper place/orientation (which depends on the type of HK Mag).
Best to you,
John
