My father in law has given me a luger he has had since 1955, I am a gun collector of sorts but he is not and couldn't recall any information. I realize photos are really necessary and I will try to get them. The gun is maybe 95%, no re-blue, marked 1940 with a 42 on top, serial #72XX, with I believe a cursive "b". It has all matching numbers including one correct numbered magazine and the bore is clean and bright. a holster in very fine condition marked with a bmd and 42 below it and an eagle with WaA640 stamped on it, the luger has black grips. I thank anyone able to tell me any information about this luger.

Welcome to the forum, can not tell you a great deal more about your luger other than it is a military luger from the period associated to the third reich and was manufactured by Mauser.

The holster is it brown, the grips if authentic are very nice to have on a 1940 as they usually did not appear untill later ,you should do a search here on this forum about black grips and try and authenticate yours by paying close attention to all posts about the grips as the black grips are at times controversial.

It is possible they were changed out in Germany.

According to Jan C Stills data in Third Reich lugers the estimated production of the 1940 is set at 135,700 of which yours falls under.

If you have the ways and means of posting photo's please provide pictures and we will try and give further info.

Thanks for your response. I've read on this forum about authenticating the black grips, and it seems they are indeed authentic and original to the pistol. The holster is black and in amazingly good condition, barely a scuff mark. I have learned from this forum to not attempt to put any preservitive on it, just keep it clean and dry. Will post photos when I figure it out, thanks again.
