Michael, I am not able to view your photo but here's my best guess...Does it perhaps read 144.R.M.G.23.? If the "C" you report is a "G" then we have 144th Infantry Regiment, Machine gun Company, weapon number 23.
If, on the other hand, the "C" IS a "C" then I have no idea of what it is.
