I recently aquired a near mint 99% condition AC44 P.38 sn 9484 h. The frame on this particular pistol has a plum hue to it. I have heard that this is common to AC44 pistols. Is the information I have received correct?

Thanks,
Adam

In the latter years at Walther, the plum colored frames and slides became quite common:

There is another type...which I call 'copper' which is less common and the color is like bright new copper windings on an electric motor!

These are more valuable.

A Pro Gunsmith friend said it has to do with weak bluing salts, improper temperatures, and the hardness of the metals involved..or, all 3!
