Gentllemen I am confused ! I have been reading more and enjoying it less. The subject is the Police mark E/D see Costanso Vol.1 page 108
(example 151) While this eagle is a police E/D vintage "1934"
Danzig police proof.
What is a "1939" type eagle (page 120) with the same E/D in the lower right position of a type 1 Haenal mag. (not shown in Costanso's Police marked examples on page120)?
Was the "D" for a location?
Was the "D" for a yet undetermined police unit?

To understand correctly just how accurate Costanso's book definitions are, it can simply be stated that most are WAG's !!! From what has been learnt in the intervening years since publication of the book, has been determined with NEAR certainity that the letters of the police proofs [ c f k l & d ] are nothing more than the initials of the police inspector's last name. Nothing has been found by numerous researchers over the years to discover what these letters actually mean in the original police source documents. Only one instance was noted where a police inspectors name was recorded and it was Kommer, hence the letter K for Kommer. I say NEAR cetrtainity because nothing has ever been found to determine exactly what these letters actually represent and the closest and latest conjecture is that there are mere initials of the inspector's last name. No Depot's name, No type of police unit, and NO city name. On the other hand , most have come to accept the notion that the letter B refers to the Berlin police depot.

John is exactly right concerning the E/D found (very rare) on police mags. To my knowledge there is no basis for the term "Danzig police proof".

It is also of interest that the crown/sriptic D found on 1902 German Test Lugers is also credited to "Danzig test (Costanzo page 184 #98). To my knowledge there is no basis for the term "Danzig test". I am repeating a section of a post below questioning the Danzig test statement.

Kenyon (1991, page 84) calls this the 1902/1903 Danzig test and mentions “increased pressure from higher level military officers to those assigned to test duties at the Danzig Arsenal. .....scriptic “D” ...indicates receipt and acceptance by the Danzig Arsenal. Gortz has stated that he could find no evidence of such Danzig tests in the German archives. Gortz has established that the gothic D signified the government official that inspected the gun (not the arsenal)(Gun Collectors Digest Vol. 5 page 111-119). Are the Kenyon/Danzig documents available? Is there any update to the above information? Any opinions or insight on this controversy.

I appreciate your response gentlemen and I guess that old saying about,"opinions and noses" is true.

I always try to rationalize and apparently it is not possible always to come up with a logican explaination as to,why,where,when and who;
it is almost impossible to nail down like we would wish.

In light of your responses and believe me I have nothing but respect for your knowledge and the years of serious research that it has taken to arrive at so much information on the subject that you would author books and articles on the subject that are standard reference for the field of collecting. Having said that here we go again with my crazy thinking....

If what you say is true did that inspector with the initial L,C,K, and so on travel from factory to factory stamping police 7.65mm pistols at Walther,Mauser,and Sauer as well? If "B" is "Berlin",
Why can't "D" be Dresden or any other major city or district starting with the letter "D" ?

By the way I have all your books and anyone else's book if it is going to shine a light on the love of our perversion (Loving Lugers).
