I have observed photographs of this luger or another 1940 Luger with a similar "JAP" stamp. Someone commented that "JAP" was never a complimentary term toward the Japanese, therefore the stamp was likley applied by a British or Canadian soldier.

It seems like a "custom" rework ....the gun has been in Canada for at least 30 years...
