Need a little help to decipher this marking - 4.E.M.G.K.18.A.K I assume that it partially reads 18th gun of machine gun company, but what is 4.E. and A.K. Thanks for the help, glad youre back Jan.

Hello Jan,
I would like to add an other "translation":

Ersatzmaschinengewehr-Kompanie Nr.18,
of the Infanterieregiment Nr.4 of the
I.Armee-Korps.

Remark: The Armee-Korps were always marked with Roman numbers.

Heinrich:

There may be some confusion as a result of the original post. Did Smiffs intend to insert a 'period' after the "A.K" of the unit mark thereby starting a new sentence beginning with "I assume". In other words, I do not think that the unit marking reads, "A.K.I", the last stamp being a Roman numeral.

Need a little help to decipher this marking - 4.E.M.G.K.18.A.K I assume that it partially reads 18th gun of machine gun company,

All, The photo I posted is of the same gun. It was offered to me prior to it hitting the internet. There is no "I" in the marking. It is the marking for the 4th Ersatz machine gun company of 18th Armycorps. Jeff
