A while back I posted that an older lady inherited her Brothers collection of old Colts. I now have them to either buy or sell. I know very little about early military wheel pistols. I have four navy, one Marine and four Army marked pistols and one Civil War pistol I will show one Navy and the Marine........Around 800 Marines were produced.
Any comments appreciated,
Joe
Nice. That appears all original and has everything one would expect, all correct markings. No. 535 of 812 which went to the Marine Corps. People often remark on the small number of these produced, but if you consider the size of the USMC in 1905, this was plenty to re-arm all officers and senior NCOs and have spares; other ranks didn‘t carry handguns. And just five years later they were phased out to be replaced first with the .45 M1909 and then the 1911.
Not easy to say. High-condition ones seem to sell between about 3000 and 5000, although I‘ve seen asking prices as high as 8000. I don‘t see those as very realistic.
What I‘m not current on is how far rarity trumps condition on these. Yours obviously has finish degradation to patina over some larger surface areas especially on the frame, although I don‘t see evidence of significant corrosion.
If I were having to sell this, I‘d put it on an auction site with a starting bid of a 1000 or 1500 and see what happens. My best idea
I have added a few non firearm related items but it has been slow. I set up at a small show last weekend and now in quarantine for a close contact. Bummer.
A wonderful Colt !
My guess would be around $2K, as in this case rarity definitely trumps condition. Plus, it's got that USMC cache.
