A friend recently bought a PP on an auction. It appears to be a 1945 production PP, as the rollmark reads "ac". But below the ac, there is a line that reads "1001-0-cal 7.65", then a third line that reads "Zella-Mehlis, Germany".

Is this a post-war production, made for some GI, or is it a Vopo production pistol? Comments and responses are appreciated.

The gun is an East German 'clone' made at Suhl and the 'ac' was added to enhance the value when selling in the US. They are recent imports and the 01001 is the DDR code.

Most are marked with Hammerli, too? [Swiss exporter]

Some even had a phony Zella-Mehlis address added.

Any firearm that has been enhanced with markings to increase its value is done by an entrepreneur and not a government. Governments only care if the gun functions, for its purpose, other folk try to make a buck on a "boosted" gun. Some of these crafty people are better than others.

Thanks for your input. I guess I wasn't clear with my question to Orv. I should have asked "were these pistols originally produced for the Vopos, or were they originally produced for a commercial market?" I think whoever the entrepeneur was had to get the pistols from somewhere before he did his 'creative writing'.

I am told the 1001 code was military....so, I would presume it was made for the military and surplused out.
