I have a nice Imperial pistol dated 1916 and over-stamped with 1920. Could somebody help me with the markings on the front gripstrap...SOpIV 174? I would guess the p stands for polizei. Jim

SOpIV 174 probably looks like S.Op.IV.174. which signifies Prussian State Schutzpolizei, Oppeln, police command area IV, weapon no 174.

Your Luger almost certainally bears a sear safety.

Thank you Jan. It also has a matching magazine with alum. base stamped with a Weimar eagle. Was it common to replace the wood-based WW1 mags.? Jim

Yes after a certain date (no books with me), as wood magazines needed to be replaced, they were replaced by aluminum base magazines.
