Ok researching further I see that L.M. could also be for "Landjagerei Munster" , Prussian Rural Police, with the 59 being a property stamp and the 26 a weapon number? Reading "History Writ in Steel" would seem to confirm this and LP08's were issued to the rural police. Am I on the right track?

 

I'm afraid the format and the font size of the 59 are wrong for the Landjaegerei. I'll have to think about this one. Could you provide more details on the gun?

It definitely is not a Landjaegerei marking and I doubt that it is a German police marking. Probably military.

Well, finally think I may have found the unit to which this 1914 Erfurt was originally issued. (before the Finns rebarrelled it, it was an LP08)
