Gents, tomorrow I am picking up a 1942 all matching byf luger. It all matches apart from the magazine. The mag on it is a FXO marked Haenel magazine. Is this mag ok for this gun or should it have something different?

Cheers

I have a book coming Edward and will probably invest in more as Lugers will now become my main focus of collecting :)

Can you recommend any good book for beginners? I have just ordered Lugers at random, I was told it was a good book for starters like me.

Type 5 fxo magazines with an un-numbered aluminum base or Type 6 fxo magazines with a black plastic base are found on 42 byf pistols. A very few numbered type 5 magazines will be found on early pistols but they are a rare exception as are numbered black plastic magazines.

I should add, in the interest of full disclosure that I am of the opinion that NO NUMBERED PLASTIC MAGAZINE BOTTOMS ever left the factory that way. FWIW.

Cheers for the info John, when I pick up the luger I will replace the aluminium bottomed mag on it and replace it with the one above, the mag does not match the gun anyway. Again thanks for the heads up :D

There were two types of P08 that were issued with numbered black based mags; fxos with # in the base and unmarked black base Haenel-Schmeisser mags with three digits marked on the spine.

George,

I am certainly aware of the P.08 variations that left the factory (Mauser and Krieghoff) with magazines that had extruded bodies and a black plastic bottom and had a partial serial number pantographed on the body spine. These are well documented and legitimate variations.

However, I am not aware that Mauser ever shipped a 42 byf P.08 with an fxo magazine with plastic bottom (i.e. Type 6) that was serial numbered on the base. Serialization of magazines had stopped long before the Type 6 became standard issue. Even late issued Type 5 magazines with aluminum bodies shipped with 42 byfs were not serialized although you see a few on early production..

However, that is not to say that some well meaning armorer someplace faced with issuing a replacement magazine did not serialize them. Or for that matter any other person. I certainly have seen serialized fxo black bottom magazines; some well done and some not so much.

But, I am always willing to learn.

Respectfully,

John

here's some matching mags on a byf 42. nice looking pistol and the mags look correct to me. http://shop.pre98.com/product.sc?productId=219&categoryId=21
Adrian, at first glance perhaps, upon enlargement the 7s are really bad. Both mags have been ground (although carefully) and re-numbered. Some dealers are making "matching" mags at an alarming rate, these guns change hands a few times and gain some "legitimacy" each time. Look hard if it matches. JB
