The Patronenkasten 88 was introduced as a standard ammo crate with the adoption of the model 1888 rifle cartridge. It was subsequently used as a standard, reusable small arms crate for pistol and rifle ammo as well as flare gun rounds. Empty crates were collected and refilled and relabeled with whatever was needed to be packed.

So you can find them with all sorts of contents. They were also lighter and cheaper than the tin lined air tight crates (Luftdichter Patronenkasten) and their design was used until quite recently as I understand. The carrying handles are made of canvas and the lid is fastened and closed with leather straps.
